Minutes of CAMPACC meeting 17 June 2003
Present: Rachel (chair), Ruairi, Estella, Les, David, Quavi, Stephen, Fahim,
Adrienne, Beakal and two friends from Peace and Justice in East London.
Previous minutes were agreed
1, ATCTSA Review and campaigns submission.
A meeting had been held the day before with review body with. Sait, Les,
Estella and Dr Siddiqui representing represented CAMPACC. Les said we should
be aware of the underlying assumptions and framework of thought of the body;
we would need hard evidence have an impact. This was a challenge for us;
communities were afraid to speak out due to the hostile climate, so evidence
was limited.
Volunteers were needed for an evidence evidence-gathering exercise
volunteers were needed: Ruairi, Irish community and others. Fahim and Beakal
offered to help.
Deadline for other material for CAMPACC submission was set for end June.
Issues from discussion: ordinary criminal law was adequate to resist
perceived any real threats; anti-terrorism laws had other purposes.
Through the ATCSA Review, the government was giving the impression that it
was listening to the public.
Estella: urged us to push for a meeting with the full review group and
examine possibility of writing individually to each member.
2, Meetings/events
Peace and Justice in East London said they will consider hosting a meeting
on the Terrorism Acts.
Meetings were planned in Glasgow and Edinburgh with Liz Fekete as speaker
3, Lobbying MPs: our submission to the ATCSA Review should be sent to MPs;
also target CRE, London Mayor; and trade unions.
4, STWC relations with CAMPACC
As a result of our lobbying, STWC agreed to include a workshop on civil
liberties at 21st June conference in Hammersmith. The workshop will be
coordinated to be held by CAMPACC with Les, Dr Siddiqui and Sait as
speakers.
Les had prepared a CAMPACC draft resolution, which was agreed with
amendments after discussion, including reference to international context
(David).
Any other ideas were to go to Les in next 48 hours.
5, SWP Marxism events would include a session with Louise Christian on
civil rights which we should attend and leaflet. Should CAMPACC have a stall
there?
6, SIAC ongoing.
For the hearing on the case of Mahmoud Abu Rideh, CAMPACC held protest
outside court which was reported in the media (e.g. photo with article in
Guardian 24th June.
We agreed to monitor the hearings and request lawyers to keep us informed in
order to plan other protests. Contact Gareth and her team.
7, Vatan case update
Ruoiri informed us of the amount of police attempts to gather evidence being
gathered in from Dutch, Turkish, Bulgarian, Belgian, and German sources --
which led the prosecution to request a delay for translation work to go
ahead. Judge set a date for late November, prosecution wanted January. They
had yet to submit a summary of the charges, now expected by July.
It was probable that expert witnesses would be called at the trial, an issue
that should be addressed by CAMPACC. (
In this respect we noted of this an academic conference in St Andrews
organised by Paul Wilkinson and Conor Geartywas noted).
Case showed the collaboration between European governments where large
Turkish/Kurdish communities resided.
Next session in Kingston CC on 25th July for directions hearing.
8, Benefit concert , coordinated by Rachel, was in hand. All urged to attend
at Kufa Gallery on 27 June.
9, Themes for future CAMPACC meetings:
a, Meeting on media jointly with NUJ, MWAW and CPBF. David and Les to make
contacts and follow up.
b, Race, Nithi to contact Lee Jasper, mayors race officer.
And try and find out about anti-terrorism conference in Scotland.
10, UNISON Annual conference in Brighton
CAMPACC to lobby and leaflet. Fahim and Brighton contacts to assist. Estella
to coordinate with Fahim.
11, Kent CDAS event
Ruairi and Stephen agreed to attend. Leaflets etc. to be organized.
12, CAMPACC organisational issues to top the agenda at next meeting on 22
July.
